Golf has taught me calmness in face of adversity, says Dolphin’s lady captain

Bose Ngozi Onwuegbu

Lady Captain of Dolphin Golf Club, Lagos, Mrs. Bose Ngozi Onwuegbu, says she has become more of a calm person after embracing the game of golf. She also revealed that the sport has taught her ways to survive harsh conditions.

Onwuegbu, who is also South/West zonal representative on the Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF) board, said in Ibadan, yesterday, said she has learnt many lessons from the sport. She advocated more women’s involvement in golf.

“Golf is a frustrating game, but we can’t give in to these frustrations as golfers. We must calmly accept adversity, the virtue I have imbibed while playing the game.

“And golf also teaches us courtesy and respect for others. We don’t talk during someone’s shot or do anything to distract them. The golf course may be the last bastion of courtesy.”

Onwuegbu stressed that golf also demands honesty, adding, “it goes against our nature to count every stroke and finish every putt.

“Fudging our score is like cheating on a test. It is the reason golf pencils don’t have erasers. Golf gives us many opportunities to cheat, but we are only cheating ourselves,” she explained.

The 27 handicapper, who is also a chieftain of All Former Athletes Association of Nigeria (AFAAN), revealed plans for advocacy to enhance performances and more women’s participation in golf.
