"Going to be tricky" - Journalist reveals Newcastle face "slight problem" in bid to axe £21m ace

Newcastle United are facing a ‘problem’ in their bid to offload Miguel Almiron as a limited number of clubs are interested in ending his St James’ Park spell, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Eddie Howe was appointed as the Magpies’ head coach last November and he could use the summer window as an opportunity to freshen up his squad.

According to The Times, Howe is planning a major summer rebuild and Almiron leads a list of seven stars to have been made available for transfer.

The report suggests Dwight Gayle, Jamal Lewis, Isaac Hayden, Ciaran Clark, Emil Krafth and Karl Darlow have joined Almiron in being deemed surplus to requirements.

It has emerged that Newcastle would be open to selling Almiron for as little as £15million due to not featuring in Howe’s long-term plans on Tyneside.

Almiron made the move to St James’ Park more than three years ago, with a £21million fee seeing him surpass Michael Owen as the most expensive arrival in the club’s history.

The creative midfielder’s £74,000-per-week contract is not due to expire until the summer of 2024, so Newcastle are in a strong negotiating position if suitors come forward when the transfer window reopens.

Jones understands Newcastle have struggled to find a potential buyer as they look to get Almiron off their books.
