Global Touring Cars battles set to headline at Zwartkops Raceway
The second round of the 2022 Global Touring Cars (GTChampionship and SupaCup) will be hosted at Zwartkops Raceway this coming weekend (22-23 April), with Robert Wolk and Jeffrey Kruger having their work cut out to retain their current advantages.
This will be the first inland event for the series in 2022, while two drivers will be making their debut. The weekend will also see the return of a familiar face to the grid.
GTC Championship
In Round 1, defending Champion Wolk opened his 2022 account with 40 points. A near-perfect weekend saw the Toyota Corolla driver taking a win from the Dunlop Pole Position and setting both the fastest laps. Heading up the Chemical Logistics GTC Racing stable, Wolk has now finished 10 consecutive races on the podium.
His last non-podium result came at the corresponding round last year, also at Zwartkops Raceway.
A host of challengers are eager to beat him this coming weekend. In his Volkswagen Motorsport Golf 8 GTi, Daniel Rowe trails Wolk by 9 points and has looked very competitive in the manufacturer's return to the series. In his Ford Focus RS, Wolk's teammate Julian van der Watt accumulated 28 points on the opening weekend. With his Race 2 win, he was the only driver to prevent Wolk from taking a full house of points, and he is eager to add more victories to his tally.
Michael van Rooyen will be looking for an improvement in both his own and the Toyota Gazoo Racing team's fortunes. Last year's runner-up has got 18 points to his name, but the season opener marked the first round in a year in which he did not record a race victory.
All four 2022 GTC Championship newcomers are tied on 14 points. They are Van Rooyen's Toyota Corolla teammate Saood Variawa, reigning Investchem Formula 1600 Champion
