Girl, nine, died with coronavirus after experiencing breathing difficulties

A nine-year-old girl died of pneumonia after testing positive for coronavirus, an inquest heard. Fatima Shamriaz, who had cerebral palsy and other 'complex medical needs died at Tameside General Hospital on September 7, last year.

An inquest opening at Stockport coroners' court heard that she had tested positive for covid a 'few days prior to her death'. Police coroners officer Claire Smith said that on the morning of September 7 her parents became concerned about her breathing.

They planned to take her to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, but then resuscitation was performed at home after her breathing difficulties worsened. Fatima, who was born in Oldham, was pronounced dead on arrival at Tameside General Hospital at 10.11am.

A post mortem carried out three days later gave the cause of death as bronchial pneumonia. Assistant coroner Andrew Bridgman adjourned the hearing for a full inquest on September 5, 2022.
