Gillingham’s weekend opponents Salford City might need a positive result to secure a play-off place in League 2

Gillingham will have a say in the League 2 play-off race this weekend.

Neil Harris’ side take on Salford this Monday in their final game and while it’s a no- pressure match for the Gills, there’s plenty riding on it for their opponents.

Salford need a point to ensure they make the play-offs but if the Gills win, then that opens up the door for Mansfield Town, who are looking to make the top seven themselves.

Bradford City are also sweating on a last-day result after losing to Crewe on Wednesday night.

Carlisle United are also in the mix but their superior goal difference over their play-off-chasing rivals should ensure they have something to play for once the regular season comes to an end this Bank Holiday weekend, regardless of their result or those elsewhere.

Harris insists his men will be doing everything they can to win - in their first-ever visit to Salford - especially after a disappointing home defeat last time out against Newport County.

He said: “We performed below par and the lads know what I want in return for that performance, I want a reaction and also for sporting integrity to the rest of the league and the managers around.

“Salford need to know and will know, because they know me, that we will be at it because [the Newport game] was poor, below standard, and we don’t want to finish the season with that level of performance.

“We wanted to finish the season at home with a positive result or performance, I don’t think we got a performance and we certainly didn’t get the result.

“The challenge to the group now is to respond and do it at Salford.”
