Gillingham’s weekend opponents Mansfield Town clinch promotion from League 2 as Stockport County take the title and Forest Green Rovers are relegated

Gillingham’s faint hopes of a play-off place haven’t improved after a busy night of League 2 action.

Five games in the division all had an impact at either the top end or the bottom of the table as Stockport County claimed the title, Mansfield Town clinched promotion and Colchester United took a giant step towards survival with a result that relegated Forest Green Rovers.

Gillingham, dropping a place to 10th, have been left relying on other teams to slip up and the chances of making it into the top seven remain slim, at best. A woeful goal difference means they’re at even more of a disadvantage.

Crawley’s home game with Barrow ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving them in the final two play-off positions. One more win for Scott Lindsey’s Crawley from their last two games will see them finish ahead of the Gills, unless there’s a monumental goal swing, again unlikely.

Barrow have three games left and the Gills need them to lose all three if they want to overtake them.

Walsall also sit above the Gills after their 2-1 home win over Swindon on Tuesday while Doncaster are also better placed and also have a game extra to play, next Tuesday. They’ve won their last eight and head to Priestfield for the final game of the season next Saturday.
