Gillingham move up to second place in their Jersey Mike’s Trophy group stage after Cambridge United’s 6-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion under-21s
Gillingham moved up into a qualifying position in the Jersey Mike’s Trophy group stage on Tuesday night, despite not playing.
Cambridge United’s 6-0 victory over Brighton under-21s in their final Southern Section Group G match meant the Gills moved up a place, leapfrogging The Seagulls on goal difference.
The Gills play Northampton Town away in their final group game on Tuesday night (7pm).
Gillingham will qualify in second place if they avoid defeat in that game. They could still make it to the knockout stage if they are beaten by the odd goal.
Gillingham haven’t made it past the group stage in the past six seasons.
The position of teams level on points in the group after three games are decided in the order of: goal difference, goals scores, wins and the record against the other team. If they are still level then lots are drawn.
A young Gillingham team, meanwhile, came back from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Huddersfield Town academy in the Premier League under-21 Cup at Priestfield on Tuesday night.
The Gills’ equaliser was scored by Zac Whitelock.
Zane Albarus was included in the Gillingham team as he pushes for a return to the senior side. He captained the team.
