Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth looks ahead to their final week of pre-season after playing Brentford B on Saturday and visiting Ebbsfleet United this Friday night

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth likes what he sees as the final week of pre-season gets under way.

The Gills have just two more warm-up matches remaining before the new campaign, with another behind-closed-doors fixture and a Friday night visit to Ebbsfleet United.

Ainsworth has been without a number of senior players throughout pre-season because of injury but has been encouraged by what he has seen from those available.

After beating Dover Athletic and producing competitive displays at home against Charlton Athletic and Millwall, the Gills manager felt his side deserved more from Saturday's defeat against Brentford B after creating plenty of chances.

Ainsworth said: “We had about 18 shots at goal, which is for me would be good enough in a League Two game. That wins games, but unfortunately [against Brentford] they wouldn't go in.

“We’re really happy where we are in pre-season. Really good vibe about the place.

“The boys played well [on Saturday] when we put the high press on. I thought we looked very good. Lots of energy. It was a great workout for us and takes us into the last week of pre-season.

“Two games at the end of the week. Everyone will have 90 minutes hopefully by the time Luton [at home in the Carabao Cup on August 1] comes around.

“The boys are in a good place, some real positives from the new boys. They're gelling well, they're all together, which is the big thing for me, because I've always said, tactics and formations and things, they contribute to winning games, but they're not everything. People and players, that's what wins you games. That's what wins you trophies and leagues.

“At the moment, I'm really happy where we are. There's still going to be a bit more movement with the squad, ins and outs,
