Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence told club bosses they needed more balls into the box to help them score goals and new signing Remeao Hutton should help

Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence hopes their newest addition helps to improve a key area of concern he highlighted in the job interview.

Newly signed right wing-back Remeao Hutton has six assists to his name this season and his crossing ability is one of his key strengths. It’s an area that Clemence knew needed fixing before he got the job at Gillingham.

The Gills paid Swindon Town an undisclosed fee for the 25-year-old and Clemence could throw him straight into the starting XI this Saturday against Forest Green Rovers, assuming all of the paperwork on the deal is complete.

Clemence said: “When I arrived at the club one of the things I flagged up in my interview process was the lack of balls that were coming into the box and whether our strikers were getting enough service.

“Our strikers have probably taken some criticism this season for maybe not scoring enough goals but sometimes they may have had a lack of service. It is something we have worked on since I have been here.

“Those numbers are increasing and we are pleased with the direction that is going, but we have to keep it going.

“Remeao was flagged up to me a while ago. You can see the numbers he has produced over the last few years from a wide area, they are right up there competing probably against all leagues in the country.

“He has a number of assists, he gets balls into the box, he is athletic, can go past people and he wants to get better, he is the type of person we want in the club, the right personality, the right character. He will fit in nicely.”
