Gillingham have signed left-back Max Clark after being released from League 1 Stevenage

Gillingham manager Neil Harris has clinched a deal for a player he once tried to sign in the Championship.

Harris has been a long-time admirer of the attacking left-back and the club have now completed the signing of the 27-year-old after he was released from Stevenage following their promotion from League 2.

Gills boss Neil Harris said: "First and foremost Max is a promotion winning player from last season which shows his pedigree and his calibre.

"He is a player I have tried to sign in the past. I tried to take him to the Championship but he went abroad.

“He is a left-back who can defend but he has unbelievable quality on the Football. He's a good character and comes highly recommended."

Clark previously played alongside Gillingham right-back Robbie McKenzie at Hull City.

“He spoke so highly of the place and it's nice to be back with him in the same team,” said the newcomer.

Clark described himself as a “hard-working attack minded left-back” and he played 47 games for Stevenage last season.

He previously had spells at Rochdale and Fleetwood and his time abroad was spent playing in the Dutch league for Vitesse Arnhem. Clark returned to Hull briefly after his time in the Netherlands, the hometown club where his career started.
