Gillingham goalkeeper Jake Turner will have to wait again for his chance in the league after Crawley Town match was postponed

Gillingham goalkeeper Jake Turner will have to wait a few more weeks before his big chance comes again.

The former Newcastle United stopper was set to start against Crawley on Saturday in what would have been his first league appearance for the Gills. But the match was postponed following the death of the Queen.

Turner would have replaced Glenn Morris, who was unable to play against his parent club.

The 23-year-old was back on the substitutes’ bench for the Gills at Grimsby Town on Tuesday night and will be keeping a close eye on the rearranged fixture against Crawley for his chance to impress again. His only appearances for Gillingham have so far come in cup competitions.

“I am always ready,” he said. “I am number two at the moment, Glenn has done excellent, made many saves and kept us in games. He has won us a few points. He is a great keeper, he is experienced, and I am learning a lot off him. But I am always ready to play.”

Gills turned to the experience of Morris after Charlton loanee Ashley Maynard-Brewer got injured in pre-season.

Turner has been making the most of being understudy to an experienced keeper in Morris.

He said: “We get on well, even the young lads and Deren [Ibrahim, the goalkeeper coach]. We all want to play, but the gaffer can only choose one keeper so we have to show as much as we can in training.

“We are trying to push each other.

“It is a positive relationship, it is good at the moment. Glenn has 500 games under his belt so he is very experienced. In training he is giving me tips and after the games that I have played in he has spoken to me and said I had done well and showed where maybe I could do better.
