Gillingham defender Ryan Jackson reacts to his goal at Morecambe and positive outlook on their League 1 relegation battle

Gillingham's wing-back formation could mean more goals for Ryan Jackson - although they might not be as special as his weekend hit.

Jackson found the top-corner from outside the box for the Gills to give them the lead at Morecambe on Saturday. It was a moment of magic in a relegation battle that was otherwise devoid of brilliance.

It was Jackson’s first league goal since returning to the club in the summer of 2020. He scored three in his first spell including a 25-yarder at Shrewsbury in November 2015.

He was a second-half substitute at Morecambe, filling in at right wing-back.

Commenting on the goal, he said: “Vadaine Oliver got it from the edge of the box on the left-hand side and I helped to support the attacking play, I got it at my feet and let loose. It was a good pass from V and the main thing was that I got my head over the ball and hit the target!

“If I can help the team with some goals, I will try and this formation allows the full-backs to get forward a bit more so hopefully more opportunities will come.”

On a muddy pitch and in heavy rain at times, it wasn’t easy for the players, but the Gills dug in to get a point and maintain the five-point gap between themselves and safety in League 1.

He said: “It was a tough game and a bit of a battle in conditions that weren’t great but the boys dug in and kept a solid shape.

“We were a bit disappointed we didn’t come away with a win but it was important we didn’t lose the game.

“The confidence is high among the boys and we all believe we can achieve the impossible, that some people think, it is about sticking together and improving every week. The gaffer (Neil Harris) has only been here a couple of weeks and we are improving as we go along.
