George Byers speaks out on Sheffield Wednesday flashpoint after 2-0 win over Morecambe

George Byers opened the scoring in Sheffield Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Morecambe on Tuesday evening with a thunderous strike from around 25 yards.

It was the 25-year-old’s first league goal this season having only managed five starts in League One.

Byers signed in the summer from Swansea City, having spent a portion of last term on loan at Portsmouth, and though it has not gone as he would have liked, regular first team opportunities now finally look to be in front of him, in what is a very competitive midfield contingent at Hillsborough.

Byers reflected on the wondergoal when he spoke to the club’s media team post-match.

He said: “To be honest, I’ve been due a goal, I’d not scored in the league this season and that was one of my goals before coming here, that I want to score more goals and to help the team.

“We could’ve easily been two or three nil up at half time.

“The atmosphere’s always unbelievable, it gives me goosebumps everytime I play.”

The victory reduced the gap between Wednesday and the play-off places to four points, with Moore’s men having a game in hand on every side between third and sixth position.

Entering the final year of his contract next season, it is important for Byers to make the most of the coming months considering the rocky start he has been through with the Owls.

The Verdict

Byers is a very technically gifted midfielder at League One level and his attacking output, combined with a lack of trust from Darren Moore, has been disappointing this term.

The 25-year-old has an excellent player alongside him to learn from in Barry Bannan, possibly the best midfield conductor in the division and in that someone whose skillset can compliment Byers very nicely.
