Gelant looks for consistency in Olympic year ahead of 10km Absa race in Cape Town

The race starts at 09:00 at Woodbridge Island in Milnerton and finishes on lower Long Street in the City Center. 

The RYC Cape Town 10k is the second in the popular series of five 10km races in all the major cities of South Africa. The next race is in Durban on 7 July, followed by Tshwane on 25 August and Johannesburg on 24 September.

The first race took place on Sunday, 7 April in Gqeberha, where Kenyan Vincent Kibet Langat clocked a blistering 28:01. Langat will once again be the favourite to walk away with the honours. 

Boxer teammates Elroy Gelant (28:017) and Precious Mashele (28:19) battled it out for second and third position, respectively in Gqeberha in cold and windy conditions.

Gelant finished on the podium in the 10 000m at last month's ASA National Track and Field Championships, as well as being crowned SA Marathon champion at the Durban Marathon two weeks ago.

Gelant will be looking to earn his fourth podium finish in as many races when he comes up against the cream of the crop in Cape Town.

"It hasn't been easy. I think it comes down to consistency and discipline over the years, but I also think it comes down to a renewed mindset especially being an Olympic year," Gelant said on Friday about his recent good run of form.

"I've been to Rio and Tokyo and for me, it's almost like a switch that has been put on because of the Paris Olympics. It provides a positive outlook in terms of my current performances."

Gelant is positive about his preparation leading up to the Cape Town 10km and confirmed his desire to run sub 28 minutes on Sunday.

"I ran the marathon two weeks ago and I can feel that my legs have recovered. Whether it's fully recovered is another question," he said.
