Gary Neville tells Glazers to demolish Old Trafford and to build new stadium

Manchester United legend Gary Neville believes the time is right for Old Trafford to be tore down and for a new state-of-the-art stadium to be built in its place.

The club are close to appointing specialists to finalise plans for a huge revamp of United’s home. Three plans have been drawn up; increasing the capacity of the south stand, focusing on the rejuvanation of the hospitality suites across the stadium or demolishing the stadium itself and building a new one.

While that final option is considered the least likely due to United’s history with the stadium, it’s a consideration as starting again from afresh could actually be the cheapest and most worthwhile choice.

That option has caused significant panic among United fans, who do not want to see the famous stadium demolished.

But Neville believes that would be the right choice for the club moving forward, as they need to make up ground on the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham and Liverpool who have overtaken them in recent years.

‘There’s a story emerging from Old Trafford that they might be looking to rebuild the entire stadium,’ Neville said on Instagram Live. ‘I’ve just been asked what I think of it, I actually think it would be the right move, I think by the time they’ve spent the money that needs to be spent on Old Trafford, the existing one, then I think you’re probably better off building a brand new super stadium. ‘I do think Manchester United should always be at the forefront of stadiums, best facilities, and they have fallen behind.’

Asked by Jamie Carragher if he’d then support the Glazers if they funded a new stadium, Neville reitterated his belief that it’s time for them to sell the club.
