Gary Neville left stunned by Manchester United fans' chant towards players vs Brighton

Gary Neville has admitted he felt Manchester United would never resort to the chants directed at the players during their 4-0 defeat to Brighton. The demoralising loss for Ralf Rangnick's side encapsulated a glum season from a Reds perspective as the Seagulls piled on the misery in United's penultimate game of the campaign.

During the one-sided contest, fans proceeded to chant 'you're not fit to wear the shirt'. Defeat means United will have their worst points tally in their Premier League history with sixth likely to be the highest achievable position.

But Neville couldn't argue with the sentiment claiming the players have 'thrown the towel in', saying on his own Sky Sports podcast : "I've got nothing to add other than the players are only damaging themselves.

"With every minute they play for that football club, they are only damaging themselves to a point whereby fans won't forget. The fans last night were singing 'you're not fit to wear the shirt', I've never ever heard Manchester United fans resort to that chant, that's the sort of chant that you hear at QPR a few years ago, Sunderland where they were walking out.

"I've never in my time known the fanbase turn on the team like this one but it's now really clear they've thrown the towel in, they really have. It's been a disgrace for a couple of months."
