Gary Neville in 'lucky' claim as Brendan Rodgers highlights VAR inconsistency at Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay was described as a "lucky boy" by Sky pundit Gary Neville after being shown a yellow card for a heavy tackle during the Premier League match against Leicester City.

With the score at Old Trafford locked at 0-0 after 50 minutes, McTominay tried to dribble forward with the ball but a heavy touch saw the ball run away from him. In an attempt to regain possession, the Manchester United midfielder lunged into a tackle on James Maddison that saw him crunch into the Foxes star's shin pads.

Leicester City players immediately appealed to referee Andre Marriner for McTominay to be sent for an early shower, but the 25-year-old escaped with just a yellow card.

"He's caught him with the follow through. His foot is higher than I thought," pundit and United legend Gary Neville said initially on the Sky Sports broadcast of the game.

Brendan Rodgers contested both of the key decisions that prevented Leicester City from earning victory at Manchester United.

The City boss watched his side earn a point at Old Trafford but it could easily have been two more, especially if a couple of big calls by referee Andre Marriner had gone their way.

With 10 minutes to go, James Maddison finished past David De Gea, only to see the goal ruled out following a VAR review for a foul by Kelechi Iheanacho on Raphael Varane. Earlier, Scott McTominay had avoided a red card for a forceful, late challenge on Maddison.

It is understood that had Marriner sent off McTominay for the tackle, it would not have been overturned by VAR, but the video officials neither felt a yellow card was a clear error. Rodgers was disappointed with both calls,
