Gary Neville and Gary Lineker wade in after Aston Villa's shock Watford defeat

Aston Villa's 1-0 defeat to Watford on Saturday was a damaging result for Villa Park boss Steven Gerrard.

Villa slumped to back-to-back defeats to teams fighting relegation after a loss to Newcastle United by the same result on February 13.

Gerrard 's side beat Everton 1-0 in their last game of January but their last win before that came in the middle of December at Norwich City.

Villa have drawn games against Leeds United and Manchester United while also losing to Brentford and Chelsea since the Norwich game.

There is no panic but rather a frustration at the manner of performances with Gerrard fuming after the Watford loss.

Sky Sports pundit and former Man United defender offered probably the most damning appraisal of Villa's defeat to the Hornets on his podcast with the satellite broadcaster.

"Come 5pm, those results made me think," he said.

"I thought Watford have looked a real mess but that was a big result.

"When you start to get a result like that they (Watford) will be thinking 'I have started to see things working that we did in the week'."

BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker also had his say on the game during the highlights show on Saturday night.

"A blow to Villa, they had plenty of attempts but only one shot on target," he said.

"After an early bounce, it is a little bit of a dip for Gerrard."

Villa return to action when they travel to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday (3pm).

"People have got to stand up and be counted," Gerrard said.

"I will take the heat and the pressure.

"The responsibility is on me, of course it is, but when it is a quality issue in the final third it has got to come from the dressing room as well."
