Gary Lineker and Micah Richards agree Man United star sold by Erik ten Hag is 'outstanding'
West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s display against Aston Villa has been described as "outstanding".
Wan-Bissaka, who joined the Hammers in August on a seven-year deal worth £15million from Manchester United, has enjoyed an impressive debut season at the London Stadium. The 27-year-old Englishman was in fine form again in Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Villa Park, thriving in a more advanced role.
He produced a dynamic performance in the right wing-back position, contributing two key passes, four successful dribbles, four crosses, and winning six ground duels. His display earned plaudits from Match of the Day's Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, who singled him out after a spirited second-half comeback from Graham Potter’s side.
Richards began by saying on The Rest Is Football podcast: “I thought Wan-Bissaka was outstanding.” Lineker concurred, adding: "I was going to say the same thing, brilliant performance."
Richards went on to say: “His energy, his work-rate, his delivery at times, his recovery runs, his tackle - it was just brilliant to see. He allowed them to push up and do what they needed to do.”
In contrast to his time at Old Trafford, where he was almost exclusively used as a full-back in a back four and struggled to justify his £50m price tag, Wan-Bissaka appears to have found his footing at West Ham. Under various managers, he made 190 Red Devils appearances but struggled to maintain consistent performances, particularly in his later seasons when Erik ten Hag was in charge.
He fell out of favour with Ten Hag and nearly departed in the summer of 2023 after four years with the club, only to be persuaded by the Dutchman to stay for another season. However, the defender reversed his decision at the end of the 2023/24
