Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher at odds over controversial decision in Man City draw vs Newcastle

Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher disagree about the decision to overturn Kieran Trippier’s red card in Newcastle’s draw with Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola managed to rescue a point at St James’ Park, coming back from 3-1 down to draw 3-3 albeit lost his 100 per cent start to the season. Nine minutes after half-time, Trippier bent in a free-kick to establish the initial two-goal lead for the hosts.

Not long after Bernardo Silva’s equaliser, Tripper was shown a straight red by referee Jarred Gillet. However, a VAR review overturned the decision, much to the disgruntlement of former Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher.

"That Trippier tackle is going to be a red in the future,” he tweeted. “It's not a leg breaker, but why should a player be able to take someone out at knee height with no intention of winning the ball?"

However, Lineker took the opposing view, stating that the decision to overturn the dismissal was correct. He wrote: "Agree with VAR decision. Cynical foul but yellow the right colour.”

City had started the game in terrific fashion, Ilkay Gundogan directing in the opener after five minutes. However, they went into the break 2-1 down thanks to Miguel Almiron’s bundling effort and Callum Wilson’s clever finish for Newcastle.

Tripper’s free-kick on 54 minutes almost put the game out of sight for the champions before a poacher’s goal from Erling Haaland and Silva’s neat finish from a superb Kevin de Bruyne assist levelled the scores on 64 minutes.
