Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer agree with Steven Gerrard in sharp Aston Villa warning

Aston Villa slumped to a third consecutive defeat in the Premier League when they were beaten 2-1 by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.

Villa were awful at Molineux, the scene of arguably their worst performance under Steven Gerrard since he was appointed as Dean Smith's replacement nearly six months ago. Jonny opened the scoring with an exquisite finish after only seven minutes and an Ashley Young own goal put Wolves two goals ahead after half-time.

A debatable penalty handed Villa the chance to halve the deficit through Ollie Watkins but they could not find an equaliser and the defeat to Wolves leaves Gerrard 's men in tenth place, only six points clear of Leeds United in 16th who have a game-in-hand. Since the middle of February Villa have lost two games on the bounce, won three and then lost three.

BBC Match of the Day host Gary Lineker and presenter Alan Shearer were in agreement with Villa boss Gerrard about his side's performance. "It was a particularly impressive performance particularly in the first half when I think it's probably fair to say Villa were a bit poor," Lineker said.

Shearer agreed, adding: " Wolves were superb in that first half and they went after Villa. "Villa were all over the place and Gerrard was right, it should probably have been more.

"They came into it in the second half but in the first half they were terrible." Gerrard did not pull any punches when he offered his assessment of the game, firing a sharp warning at his players ahead of the summer transfer window.

"We have only got ourselves to blame, at the moment we're looking like a 45-minute team and that's on me," Gerrard said. "I've got to fix it and I will fix it. The players in the building have to help me fix it now, if not
