Galway United apologise for social media post

Galway United have apologised after a post on their social media channels caused offence in the week leading up to the kick-off of the new League of Ireland season.

The post showed a picture of Galway player Ed McCarthy holding a 'STOP' traffic sign as the song 'Murder on the Dancefloor' played.

In November 2020, while a Cork City player, McCarthy received a two-year suspended sentence and a seven-year driving ban after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of a father of two.

McCarthy was speeding when he caused the death of 55-year-old Polish national, Andrzej Obalek, in Cork on 18 February of that year.

A statement from Galway, issued on Thursday afternoon, read: "Galway United wish to advise that there was no offence intended by a recent social media post issued by the club and would like to unreservedly apologise for any hurt or distress that the post may have caused."

Newly promoted Galway kick off their campaign at home to St Patrick's Athletic on Friday night.
