Gabriel Batistuta's indirect free-kick vs AC Milan might be the greatest ever

Gabriel Batistuta is a man that many football fans could wax lyrical about for hours on end.

The Argentine is one of the greatest strikers the sport has ever seen, both at club level and on the international stage.

For his country, Batistuta bagged 54 goals in just 78 appearances and only Lionel Messi (86 goals) has found the back of the net more times for La Albiceleste.

At club level, the man aptly nicknamed ‘Batigol’ was just as lethal, particularly with Fiorentina.

Batistuta joined La Viola in 1991 after a season with Boca Juniors in his homeland and went on to score 203 goals for the club.

He’s still Fiorentina’s leading scorer in Serie A and claimed the division’s Golden Boot award in the 1994/95 campaign.

Batistuta was also named Serie A Foreign Footballer of the Year in 1999 following his brilliance throughout 1998/99.

And in just the third game of that season, the Argentine icon scored perhaps the greatest ever goal from an indirect free-kick as part of a hat-trick against eventual title winners AC Milan.

Milan players gathered in numbers on the line to try and prevent the Fiorentina man from scoring, but they were ultimately no match for Batistuta and his hammer of a right foot.

The striker hit the ball with so much power that it nearly burst the net and he duly wheeled away in celebration.
