GAA approve disciplinary proposals for Congress

A series of new proposals on discipline have been approved by the GAA's Management Committee and Central Council.

The relevant proposals will now be incorporated as motions which will be put forward for consideration at Congress 2023.

The proposals were put forward by the association’s Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC), Central Hearings Committee (CHC) and Central Appeals Committee (CAC).

Following a meeting between GAA president Larry McCarthy and the three bodies, the proposals will aim to address serious disciplinary issues that arose in recent months.

In effect, the new motions will give disciplinary committees the opportunity to crack down further on serious cases.

Among the recommendations put forward are increasing the maximum suspension from 96 weeks to 240 weeks.

Penalties for infractions committed by team officials, which were on a match ban basis, will change to a combination of a time-based suspension and match bans.

Any type of physical interference by a team official with an opposing player or team official would move from a Category IIIa Infraction to a Category IVa Infraction.

The penalties for infractions committed by team officials at underage games (under-17 and under) are to be doubled.

Penalties are to be issued to the secretary and chairperson of the relevant unit for breaches of suspensions by team officials.

The minimum penalty available to Hearings Committees shall be doubled unless the Hearings Committee is satisfied that the defending party's request for a hearing, and their submission to the Hearings Committee, is not frivolous or vexatious and is not solely based on procedural or technical arguments.
