Steven Gerrard is looking to bolster Aston Villa’s midfield this summer as Conor Hourihane, Douglas Luiz and Morgan Sanson could be on their way out.
And while the Claret and Blues aren’t short of creativity with Philippe Coutinho, Emiliano Buendia and Jacob Ramsey, Villa have been linked with Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The 28-year-old could be on his way out of Liverpool after falling down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp. Oxlade-Chamberlain made 28 appearances in all competitions this season but started just 17 games across the board, nine of which came in the Premier League.
The England international would surely jump at the chance to get first-team football and Frank McAvennie says it would be a smart move for Villa to sign him. He told Football Insider: “I think that is a good bit of business.
“I like him as a player. He would love to stay at Liverpool and be in the first team, but he’s not. The reality is, he can go and play for Aston Villa every week. He would be a really good signing for Villa. Him and Coutinho, that’s not bad, formidable. The two of them have goals in them.”
But while McAvennie is a big fan of Oxlade-Chamberlain, goals have been hard to come by from the 28-year-old. He’s scored 17 goals with 15 assists from 132 games at Liverpool (2017 – present), netting only four goals across the board in the last two seasons.
If Villa sign Oxlade-Chamberlain, Gerrard might have a job on his hands to get the midfielder firing, as he’s struggled in front of goal for many years.
