Frank Lampard must listen to Carlo Ancelotti warning at Liverpool

For the first time since October 2000, Everton will travel to Anfield this weekend knowing that they were victorious on their previous visit to their old enemy. Almost 22 years is a long time to be able to say that.

As we all know, there are caveats that come with the statement however. The fact that there were no supporters in the stadium last time around no doubt had a major impact on the performances of both sides and the result of the game - Liverpool were an entirely different entity on their own ground last term than the imperious behemoth they represent now.

Because of that, how much can Frank Lampard really read into the Carlo Ancelotti tactics that managed to secure three points on that occasion? Potentially not all that much, no doubt also because Jurgen Klopp will be ready this time around.

Everton's formation in their February 2021 visit to Anfield was certainly an interesting one, switching rather fluidly between a back four and a defensive five with Lucas Digne and Seamus Coleman operating as the wing-backs.

Tom Davies, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Andre Gomes set up as a rather deep midfield three leaving James Rodriguez and Richarlison to lead the line at the top end of the pitch - and the latter two of course combined to give the Blues a crucial early lead. Try as they might, and thanks to some incredible Jordan Pickford saves, Liverpool could not break though.

So does that mean a more defensive set-up, and perhaps a back five, is the best way to go about a match against Liverpool? In last year's circumstances clearly it was, but let's not jump to that conclusion this time around.
