The summer tourism season here in France is in full swing, as foreign tourists flood into the country. As for the French themselves, more than half of the population are expected to take a summer holiday. And the hot spots are a bit different than in years past.
Just as much of the rest of the world, France is dealing with soaring inflation, and gas prices are up significantly. People are feeling the pinch, and for that reason, French vacationers are staying closer to home.
Meanwhile, France is the most visited tourist site in the world, and this summer, the tourism industry is under intense pressure. With the French staying closer to home, there is limited space for others, especially in the south of the country. There's also an unwelcome impact on the environment.
