Four people rescued and town centre road closed as firefighters battle restaurant blaze

Four people were rescued by firefighters after a blaze broke out at a Turkish restaurant in Oldham town centre.

Yorkshire Street was also closed for while as up to 35 firefighters tackled the blaze at Istanbul Resturant. Crews remained at the scene for about four hours after the fire broke out in the kitchen at around 8am on Saturday.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service said: "Just before 8am this morning firefighters were called to reports of a fire in the kitchen of a restaurant on Yorkshire Street, Oldham. Seven fire engines, including specialist support units, attended the scene and crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to quickly extinguish the fire.

“Fire crews helped to remove four occupants from the building, who were then conveyed to the care of our colleagues at North West Ambulance Service, before working to clear and make the area safe. GMFRS were at the scene for around four hours."
