Four Man United coaches suggested as Erik ten Hag appointment gets Klopp and Guardiola approval

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Thursday, April 14.

Rio Ferdinand outlines four potential assistants for Erik ten Hag

It seems only a matter of time now before Erik ten Hag is named as Manchester United’s next permanent boss. The Dutchman is close to agreeing a deal with the club after being their number one choice since mid-March.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s former assistant Steve McClaren was linked with a shock return to Old Trafford under ten Hag. The Ajax boss was his assistant when he guided FC Twente to the Dutch title in 2009.

But Rio Ferdinand has not named him as one of the candidates he believes could join ten Hag in the dugout. He named former United players Robin van Persie and Edwin Van der Sar among his suggestions.

Champions League rule change to impact United

UEFA are set to approve a motion put forward by the European Club association (ECA) that will see two Champions League places be handed to two teams who finish outside of qualification spots.

It would mean from the 2024/25 season, clubs who finish directly outside of these places could still qualify for the competition if they have a good enough coefficient ranking. This is based on historic performance over the previous five years.

It means clubs like United who, for example, finish fifth in the Premier League may still yet be offered a place in the Champions League. The plans have been blasted by many as a backdoor European Super League with radical changes set to be installed, if proposals are passed.
