Formula E: Sam Bird excited by Gen 3 car as he reveals first impressions

Sam Bird has expressed his excitement over the Gen 3 car coming to Formula E from next season, as the series once again evolves.

Whilst the current Formula E championship is still far from over with four races to go, some focus has naturally turned to the next campaign, with the Gen 3 car set to make its debut as the sport continues to push the boundaries with what is possible in terms of all-electric vehicles.

Certainly, it’s going to be exciting seeing how the new car fares and Bird sounds already pretty blown away by the new machine having taken it for a test run.

Speaking to the media, including Give Me Sport, ahead of the London E-Prix at the end of July, Bird had this to say:

“I’ve got to say Formula E has done a stunning job with the Gen 3 car, it’s a massive step fowards in technology for us to take, everybody’s been working extremely hard on it.

“I drove it for the first time a few weeks ago and it came out of the pitlane where we were doing the testing and my first thought was holy s*** this is some power now! I got from turn one to turn three really quickly, much quicker than we have done in the Gen 2 cars which put a smile on my face. The technology under braking is a lot more advanced and intricate, we actually don’t have brakes it’s all done by regenerative braking which is super cool.

“Towards the end of the day the team got me to do a mini-race run and I was amazed how little energy I was using because of how much we were putting back into the battery.

“I said to the team: ‘Guys if we were to do a full race I’d be doing a 90-lap race, this is crazy.’ So it’s a massive leap into the future for us as a series and there’s a long way to go for us as a team to get the balance, we need to work on how we can get
