Formula E: Alberto Longo discusses hopes for support series to championship

Formula E co-founder Alberto Longo has confirmed that plans are in place to bring in support series for the championship and that they are a priority, though they might not happen as early as the next couple of years.

The all-electric series is approaching its crescendo with just two racing weekends left, in London and South Korea respectively, but, as with any motorsport, there is always one eye on the future.

Indeed, speaking at a recent event in London ahead of the London E-Prix at the end of this month around the ExCel centre, Longo confirmed that work was ongoing over the development of a support series in Formula E – like what Formula 2 and Formula 3 are to Formula 1 – though there will not be a championship introduced overnight:

“The challenge is that we’ve started 65 years later than Formula 1!

“Sooner than you believe that we’ll be having these layers of electric car championships. Already we’ve seen some other championships that are electric.

“We’re working on it with the FIA and with other partners. It’s something that we need and hopefully we can get there sooner rather than later.

“It’s a priority for Formula E. I can’t tell you it’s going to happen next year or the year after but it’s a priority for Formula E.”

Adding those extra support series would certainly add to the Formula E weekend as a whole, with even more racing action on offer.

Longo is clear that it is something he wants to see introduced, too, but how long it’ll take for that to happen remains to be seen.
