Formula 1: Alpine told to re-sign Daniel Ricciardo

Christian Horner has said that if he was in charge of Alpine he would sign Daniel Ricciardo, with the Aussie facing a potential F1 exit.

Ricciardo is a multi-Grand Prix winner and has been one of the quickest drivers on the grid in his career, but his time at McLaren has not gone how he, or anyone else, would have wanted or even expected.

Indeed, on paper at the start of their partnership, Lando Norris and Ricciardo looked one of the strongest pairings in the whole of F1 but whilst Lando has gone from strength-to-strength, Daniel has found himself simply unable to get to grips with the way the McLaren drives and feels.

That, then, has led to him being replaced by Oscar Piastri for 2023 and there is now the stark possibility that we won’t have Ricciardo on the grid for next year.

He’s been linked with a move to Haas and Alpine but both seem to have other drivers in their sights more, and he himself has said he has accepted he might not be in the sport next season.

It’s a far cry from his time at Red Bull where he was winning races and keeping the likes of Max Verstappen more than honest, then, and his former team boss Christian Horner has said that if he was running Alpine he’d look at getting the Aussie in, with Ricciardo driving for the team when they were last Renault.

“I probably would, to be honest with you,” Horner said to the Beyond the Grid podcast when asked if he’d sign him for Alpine.

“They know him from a couple of seasons ago and it was great together in his last season there, scoring podiums.
