Former Western Province and Springbok legend HO de Villiers dies

Former Springbok fullback HO de Villiers had died.

He was 76.

De Villiers played 14 Test matches for South Africa, scoring 25 points and in 15 tour matches.

He is widely regarded for revolutionising fullback play with more emphasise on attacking from the back.

Another big tree has fallen, rest in peach Oom HO de Villiers??A true gentleman, brilliant player and true scholar of the game????

He scored 11 points in his debut in green and gold, with his first cap coming at home against France in 1967 in Durban.

Christened Henry Oswald by his parents, De Villiers was born in Johannesburg.

De Villiers played 38 times for Western Province after moving to Cape Town for his military service.

He turned out for only two clubs in Cape Town, the University of Cape Town and Villagers, who he represented from 1968 to 1979.

His final Test for the Springboks came in 1970, where he turned out against Wales at the famous Cardiff Arms Park.
