Former Newcastle United midfielder resigns from role as Ipswich Town's U23s boss

Former Newcastle United midfielder Kieron Dyer has resigned from his role as Ipswich Town’s U23s manager. Dyer had been in charge of the Young Tractor Boys for around 18 months and leaves with the club second in the South section of the Professional Development League.

The reasons behind is sudden departure remain unclear, however back in October Dyer was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis, which prompted him to make it public that he needed a liver transplant. Dyer spoke publicly about his diagnosis and seemed determined to get back to full health quickly.

However, the 43-year-old has now left his position with Ipswich, much to the surprise of the club’s CEO Mark Ashton. The Tractor Boys released the following statement on their official website.

It said: “Ipswich Town Football Club can confirm that Kieron Dyer has resigned from his position as U23s manager with immediate effect. Kieron had been in charge of the young Blues since October 2020 and leaves the U23s following a successful season to date.

“Town CEO Mark Ashton said: ‘It has come as a surprise to us that Kieron wishes to stand down from his role as U23s manager. Kieron’s played his part in the development of some of our young players and we thank him for his efforts. I speak on behalf of everyone at the Club in wishing Kieron all the very best with his future.’”

Dyer was one of the country’s top English midfield players during his time at Newcastle, where he scored 36 goals and provided 44 assists in 250 appearances. He was also capped 33 times by his country, before announcing his retirement from playing at the age of 35 following various injury problems.
