Former Man United ace Ashley Young wears black armband during Everton match in tribute to Lady Cathy Ferguson

Former Manchester United captain Ashley Young has paid his respects to Sir Alex Ferguson's wife, Lady Cathy Ferguson, following the announcement of her passing on Friday afternoon.

Flags were flown at half mast at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon as United paid their respects to Lady Cathy. A round of applause preceded the game with Brentford, with United players donning black armbands.

A little over 30 miles away from Old Trafford, Everton were facing Bournemouth in their final Premier League game before the international break. Former United captain Young played the full 90 minutes for the Toffees, and he too wore a black armband in tribute to his former manager's wife.

Taking to Twitter after Everton's 3-0 win over Bournemouth, Young wrote: "Black armband worn for Lady Cathy, thinking of you Boss. RIP." The social media post had been 'liked' more than 10,000 times within an hour of being posted, with hundreds of United fans quick to acknowledge the classy gesture.

Young was signed by Sir Alex from Aston Villa back in 2011 and went on to play over 250 Premier League games for the Reds. He was named captain of the club in August 2019 before leaving for Serie A giants Inter Milan just six months later.

The Everton full-back was part of the last United squad to lift the Premier League title under Sir Alex back in 2013. He also won an FA Cup, a League Cup and a Europa League title during his eight-and-a-half-year stay at Old Trafford.
