Former Man City striker Emmanuel Adebayor wins FIFA ruling over 'unfair sacking'

Former Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has been awarded over £400,000 after winning a FIFA ruling against his 2020 sacking from Olimpia.

Adebayor, who played for City between 2009-2012, last played in the Premier League in 2016, before two years at Istanbul Basaksehir and a short spell at Kayserispor. He then joined Paraguayan side Olimpia in 2020, making four appearances before the Covid pandemic stopped the season as sport across the world took a break for months.

However, when Olimpia's season resumed, Adebayor was sacked in June 2020. He took the issue to DIDA, who have now ordered Olimpia to pay him 510,000 dollars (£420,000), plus 12 per cent interest backdated to 2020, following a tribunal.

New Olimpia president Miguel Cardona said: "There's nothing we can do about contracts that were previously signed, but the club will change its policy on salaries, and impose a pay cap. We had a demand for payment from Adebayor. We knew he was on 200,000 dollars a month."

Adebayor made 45 appearances for City, scoring 19 times before joining Real Madrid and Tottenham on loan and then moving to Spurs permanently.

He is perhaps best remembered for his iconic celebration after scoring vs Arsenal in 2009 at the Etihad, when he ran the length of the pitch and slid in front of the Gunners fans, who threw objects in his direction after his acrimonious exit from the Emirates that year.
