Former Kent cricket star Andrew Symonds dies in car crash

Former Kent cricket star Andrew 'Roy' Symonds has died in a car crash.

The Australian all-rounder died last night when his vehicle left the road about 50km west of Townsville in Queensland, police said this morning.

Emergency services attempted to revive him at the scene, however, the 46-year-old died of his injuries.

The cricketing world has been rocked by the news and tributes have been pouring in.

His former team mates at Kent County Cricket Club tweeted about the sad news earlier.

The tweet said: "The Club is shocked & saddened to learn of the passing of former overseas star and cult hero, Andrew Symonds.

"The thoughts of everyone at Kent Cricket are with “Roy”’s family & friends at this desperately sad time."

In April 2020 cricket fans voted him as the Kent Spitfires’ greatest overseas star.

At the time fans were polled on the club’s social media platforms and picked Symonds as the greatest white-ball overseas player in the history of the Spitfires.

Symonds received 443 out of over 2,000 total votes cast after leading the polls for the majority of the week-long search.

Other cricketers have also paid tribute to Symonds.

Head coach of Whitstable Cricket Club and former player Dave Fulton also tweeted earlier this morning.
