Former Ireland international Miah Dennehy dies aged 73

Former Republic of Ireland winger Miah Dennehy has died at the age of 73.

Dennehy began his career with Cork Hibs before moving to Nottingham Forest in 1973.

Brian Clough's arrival at the City Ground transformed the club's fortunes, but the Corkman was deemed surplus to requirements after six months of Clough's reign and joined Walsall, concluding his spell in English football with Bristol Rovers in 1980.

Returning to the League of Ireland in 1980, Dennehy had stints with Cork United, Waterford, Limerick United, Drogheda United and Newcastle West before retiring in 1985.

Best remembered as the first man to score a hat-trick in the FAI Cup final when Hibernians saw off Waterford United in 1972, Dennehy won 11 international caps between 1972 and 1977.

The League of Ireland's official X account posted: "All at the League of Ireland and the FAI are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Leeside legend Miah Dennehy, hat-trick scorer for Cork Hibs in their 1972 FAI Cup final win over Waterford and capped 11 times by Ireland.

"Miah's memory will be celebrated ahead of the Cork City v Waterford play-off final tonight at Tallaght Stadium."
