Former Gillingham boss Steve Evans appointed manager of League 2 Stevenage

Former Gillingham manager Steve Evans is back in football just over two months after leaving Priestfield.

Evans has taken over at Stevenage - just five months after he was initially linked with the League 2 strugglers.

Approaches to talk to Evans over Stevenage's managerial vacancy in November were rejected at the time by Gillingham chairman Paul Scally.

Stevenage subsequently appointed Paul Tisdale as their manager but he has now departed and been replaced by Evans.

Evans joined the Gills in the summer of 2019 and posted two top-10 finishes in League 1 before leaving in January with the Gills struggling in the drop zone under his leadership this season.

Stevenage chairman Phil Wallace said: "Paul has worked tirelessly for us since he joined but we have won three points from the last nine games to drop into a relegation fight.

"With nine games to go, we have to change our fortune and we are hoping Steve will do that."

Tisdale had gone nine games without a win. During 19 league games in charge of Stevenage, they won just three times. Stevenage sit three points above the League 2 relegation zone with just nine games remaining.

They'll be hoping former Leeds and Peterborough boss Evans can steer them to safety before mounting a promotion challenge next season.
