Foreign Office issues travel advice update for Spain

Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits and many will be jetting off there during the school holidays. If you are planning to travel to the country, it’s worth knowing the latest guidance as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued an update for spain.

The FCDO has updated travel advice for the following topics: renting a vehicle, water safety, altitude sickness, and forest fires. The latter comes as the Mediterranean experiences baking conditions, with wildfire burning on several Greek islands.

If you’re planning on renting a car while you’re in Spain, then be prepared to present your passport as car rental companies have a legal duty to register passport details of tourists when they collect a vehicle. The same applies when you check-in at hotels and tourist accommodation.

Naturally swimming in the sea is a popular holiday activity, but the FCDO has warned Brits to take care when going for a deep, as many beaches - especially around the islands - can have strong undercurrents. It advises travellers not to swim at beaches close to rivers, and not to dive into unknown water where there could be rocks or shallow depths.

Bathers are urged to familiarise themselves with any flag systems in place on Spanish beaches and to take extra care if there are no lifeguards.

UK travellers who are venturing to one of Spain’s mountain ranges are warned of the dangers of altitude sickness. There’s a particular risk in the higher mountain ranges found in the regions of Granada, Huesca and Tenerife.
