Football finance expert makes shock claim over famous Leicester City triumph

A football finance expert has claimed that Leicester City's title triumph in 2016 was "lucky" after insisting that the highest wage bills usually brings the most success.

The Foxes stunned the Premier League by lifting the trophy under Claudio Ranieri as they finished top of the pile ahead of Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

It was achieved against all the odds as the bookies ranked them as outsiders to lift the crown, but they delivered an unforgettable season despite not having the biggest budget in the league.

And professor John Samuels, a football finance expert at the University of Birmingham, maintains that, usually, it is the teams who spend most on players that bring home the trophies.

"For the first 100 years or so of professional football, the Midlands teams were among the biggest achievers," he told Midlands Business Insider. "However, with all the money and inequality that's come into the sport, we're now out of it and the big clubs are just getting richer.

"Leicester did great, but they were lucky. Analysis has shown that the higher a club's wage bill, the more successful they will be."
