Foden, Pedri, Bellingham: Who is the most valuable midfielder in the world?

Phil Foden is now the most valuable central midfielder in world football, according to Transfermarkt.

Foden was the difference as Manchester City overcame a stubborn Atletico Madrid in their Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday.

City were struggling to break down Diego Simeone’s side until Foden came on in the 68th-minute.

Within minutes, City were 1-0 ahead as Foden wonderfully created the opener for Kevin De Bruyne.

As you’d expect, the plaudits came thick and fast for the 21-year-old after the match.

On BT Sport, former City midfielder, Owen Hargreaves, called him a “unique” footballer.

“He’s able to do this as a false nine, as a right winger, as a No.10, as a deeper midfielder, he can play off the left. It’s hard enough to play at this level, he can play at a world-class level in four or five different positions,” Hargreaves said.

“The thing is with Phil he’s one of one, he’s the most unique footballer around, When you see videos of him playing when he’s 10 he’s half the size of everyone else but now I think Phil’s still at the beginning of his development, I think there’s much more to come. For me personally, I think he’s David Silva, [his best position is] central. He’s best on the half turn.”

It’s true. Nobody really knows Foden’s best position.

Despite that, he’s now been ranked as the most valuable central midfielder in world football – despite him not playing there all too often for Man City.

A graphic from Transfermarkt has emerged on Reddit which shows Foden at No.1 in terms of central midfielders with a market value of €90 million. We’re sure City value him far higher than that.
