Flight from Manchester to Pakistan cancelled at last minute after protest sparks safety concerns

A flight from Manchester Airport to Islamabad was cancelled on Sunday morning as anti-government protests rocked the Pakistani capital.

Virgin Atlantic said flight VS0362 was axed due to safety and security concerns after demonstrators blockaded the main routes around Islamabad Airport. Tens of thousands of people are marching on Islamabad in a huge anti-Government demonstration.

Reports from Pakistan say Prime Minister, the former cricketer Imran Khan, is expected to face a vote of no confidence this week.

Al-Jazeera reports major roads in Islamabad have been blocked by shipping containers while riot police have been deployed in anticipation of clashes. Mehran Khan, who was due to board the Manchester flight, said passengers were told of the cancellation at the departure gate.

He tweeted: "Flight from Manchester to Islamabad has been cancelled right at the boarding gate due to protests in Islamabad. Apparently Islamabad Airport entry & exits is blocked. What the hell yaaar, can we at least come back to #Pakistan peace. Seriously ridiculous."

A Virgin Atlantic spokesperson said: "As a result of local protests in Islamabad, Pakistan, we have taken the decision to cancel our Manchester to Islamabad flight today (VS362). Protestors have blockaded the main traffic routes and the authorities have closed additional routes near the airport.

"The decision has been taken with the safety and security of our customers and people in mind. Customers affected by the cancellation have been contacted and can rebook for alternative dates, untravelled bookings can convert their booking to a travel voucher to be used all the way until 31
