Five in hospital after serious bus and car crash with major road shut off

A major road has been shut off tonight with a large emergency service response in place following a serious collision that has left five people in hospital.

The collision on Blackfriars Road, Salford, happened just before 10pm on Sunday night (December 29) and involved a Bee Network bus and a car, images from the scene show. Traffic channels show the road has been shut off from its junction with Mount Street to Lower Broughton Road, with the collision appearing to have happened on the bridge.

The M.E.N. understands five people have been taken to hospital following the crash. The extent of their injuries are not known at this stage.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:“At just before 9.50pm on Sunday (December 29) two fire engines from Salford fire station plus the technical response unit from Leigh fire station were called to reports of a crash involving a car and a bus on Blackfriars Road, Salford.

“Firefighters extricated the driver and three others from the bus before handing them to the care of colleagues form North West Ambulance Service. Crews made the area safe alongside Greater Manchester Police and were in attendance for around one hour and 20 minutes.”

Photos show a large cordon in place with multiple emergency service vehicles in attendance. The road is expected to remain shut into the early hours of Monday morning.

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment and for further information on the incident.

The A66041 Blackfriars Road is currently closed in both directions from the junction with Great Clowes Street to the Mount Street junction
