Five adults and two children injured when car hits pedestrians at Christmas market

A vehicle has crashed into pedestrians at a Christmas event in Chipping Sodbury. Several Christmas shoppers have been injured after being hit by a car.

Police confirmed that people attending the Chipping Sodbury Christmas Sunday fair were hurt when a car ploughed into the crowd. They have said that five adults and two children have been hurt in the collision.

They confirmed that the collision happened at the top of the high street today (Sunday December 1) at before 1pm when police were called out to a report of a car in a low-speed collision with pedestrians while manoeuvring out of a parking space.

The incident happened at about 12pm as what is understood to be an elderly man tried to manoeuvre out of a parking space and was in collision with pedestrians.

The inaugural Christmas Sunday market is being held in the Cotswold town with stalls selling gifts and hot food. It had attracted hundreds of shoppers. Organisers say that the market will continue but some areas are closed off.

The organisers said: "We have been advised by the police not to cancel today's event so the remainder of the High Street from Hobbs House Bakery down towards Broad Street and Horse Street is still open.

"We would ask anyone attending today to please not take photos of the incident, and not speculate on social media as we work the emergency services to help those people who need assistance."
