Finidi’s choice of Abuja camp for Eagles stirs controversy

Super Eagles Head Coach, Finidi George

Newly appointed Super Eagles coach, George Finidi, may have got off on a controversial note following his choice of Abuja for the team to train ahead of an epic 2026 World Cup qualifier against the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

The Super Eagles take on the Bafana Bafana on June 7 in Uyo in a must-win World Cup qualifier.

Rwanda lead Group C with four points, while South Africa is second on three points. Nigeria is occupying the third spot with just two points after two rounds of matches, while Benin are bottom on a point.

According to SCORENigeria, the Super Eagles will open training camp on May 28 in Abuja, and will fly out to the match venue in Uyo.

The choice of Abuja instead of Uyo, according to the online platform is not going down well with many observers, who are of the opinion that camping the players in Abuja may be a wrong move as the team will be distracted in the nation’s capital city.

They also argue that it would be better for the Super Eagles to open their camp in Uyo to familiarise themselves with the pitch at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, where they will welcome the Bayana Bayana on June 7.

After the match against South Africa, the Super Eagles will then fly out to Abidjan for a second World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic.

The overall winners of the group will qualify for the 2026 World Cup to be co-hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico.
