Filthiest penalty of the season? Norwich City’s Marcelino Nunez scores audacious spot-kick

Norwich City summer signing Marcelino Nunez scored an early contender for the filthiest penalty we’ll see all season during Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup clash against Birmingham City.

The two Championship clubs went head-to-head at Carrow Road, aiming to secure a place in the second round of the competition.

Two goals on the stroke of half-time from Danel Sinani and Jacob Lungi Sorensen put the hosts 2-0 up heading into the second half.

But Birmingham battled back after the break, levelling the scores by the 77th minute thanks to goals from Jonathan Leko and Jonathan Tomkinson.

The tie was eventually decided on penalties, and fans inside Norwich’s home ground witnessed an outrageous Panenka spot-kick from Nunez.

The 22-year-old Chile international, who only signed for the Canaries last week after leaving Universidad Catolica in his home country, showed remarkable confidence when he went head-to-head against Birmingham’s experienced goalkeeper Neil Etheridge.

Panenkas aren’t particularly rare these days but what makes Nunez’s so special is the fact he wasn’t even looking when the ball crossed the line.

The South American turned away while the ball was still in flight. He just knew Etheridge was beaten.
