FIA jewellery reminder sparks amusing exchange between Lewis Hamilton & Max Verstappen

One of the more niche topics of discussion around the Australian Grand Prix this weekend has surrounded the wearing of jewellery by some drivers when at the wheel of their car.

Earlier this week in the Race Director notes from Niels Wittich, there was a reminder that the wearing of jewellery when driving is prohibited, and drivers could face sanctions if they are caught wearing some before they get in the car.

The reminder itself wasn’t directed at anyone in particular but Lewis Hamilton is certainly well known for wearing things like a necklace and nose-stud, and so naturally he was asked about it in the Formula 1 press conferences ahead of Friday practice in Australia.

Opting to take an amusing tone, the Briton said:

‘Well I have certain piercings that I just really can’t take out, that few people know about…… No, I’m just joking.”

Elsewhere in the press briefing, Max Verstappen was also asked about the rule and he had this to say:

“I would be too heavy if I wore jewellery, so it’s not possible.

Hamilton couldn’t resist making a joke after that comment, though, with him retorting: ‘I know you have a nipple piercing man, come on,” before Max laughed and asked if Lewis wanted to see it again.

Certainly, it’s nice to see these two having an amusing exchange after all the battling in 2021 and it has, in fairness, always seemed as though there is a level of respect there, even if it was pushed to the limit last year.
