FIA confirms restrictions Russian drivers must follow in 2022

The FIA has outlined a code of conduct Russian drivers must follow in order to be allowed to compete in events this year.

Earlier this week, motorsport’s governing body announced that competitors from Russia and Belarus would be able to race so long as they did in a neutral capacity under an FIA flag.

This is despite the cancellation of all sanctioned events in Russia and Belarus, including the Russian Grand Prix which was due to take place on September 25.

On Friday, the FIA sent out a document outlining what Russian and Belarusian drivers could and could not do if they wanted to compete in 2022.

While the FIA has permitted drivers from Russia and Belarus to race, it has not ruled out the potential for harsher sanctions to be implemented.

“The FIA continues to carefully monitor the events in Ukraine and reserves the right to take any further actions or implement further measures in the future, including any necessary actions required to comply with its obligations under any applicable sanctions regime and/or any contracts to which the FIA is a party.”

As well as following the code of conduct, drivers will have to sign a document that warns they could be prevented from entering or participating in events should the FIA adopt further measures.

The document reads: “I acknowledge and accept that the FIA may implement further measures or issue further decisions in relation to my participation in Covered Events in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, including the right to refuse me entry into or prevent me from participating in and/or attending any Covered Event. I will comply with any such further measures and decisions.”
