FIA and Red Bull come to 'secret' agreement on penalty for 2021 budget irregularities

In a move that may upset the grid more than placate it, the FIA announced it has agreed on a penalty with Red Bull but won't announce it yet.

The reason behind the delay in announcement is out of respect for Red Bull and the grieving Mateschitz family due to the death of Dietrich Mateschitz.

Red Bull has come under severe criticism from the grid, especially from Mercedes, who have gone as far as to accuse Red Bull of cheating after the FIA released a report that revealed the Austrian team had broken the cost cap in 2021.

The team has reportedly agreed to accept the FIA's 'Accepted Breach Agreement' (ABA) after finding consensus on the penalty.

"As can now be heard," Auto Motor und Sport reported after Saturday's qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas, "the cost cap administrators of the FIA and Red Bull have agreed on a penalty behind the scenes.

"It was supposed to be communicated in Austin during the weekend, but out of respect, they will now wait a few days."

The Red Bull team were informed before qualifying that their founder had passed away at age 78.

It is not yet known when the penalty and the full details of the ABA will be released.
